July has been a very busy and fun filled month. So many different feelings and results.

At the beginning of the month, I toed up to the line at the Toronto Pan American Cup. This was also a test event for the Pan American games for 2015. A smaller but strong field and I wanted to get myself in the mix. It was relaxing to have a race so close to my training environment, family and friends. I was lucky to stay with my Mum and neighbors the night before the race. Everything in this race went to plan. I was ecstatic to capture my first Pan American Cup win.

I think I win the award for the most cheesiest post race interview:
I raced Huatulco WC last year and the conditions of the course absolutely crushed me. I have an appreciation for the difficulty on this course. I came back this year with a little more experience and much better preparation. I knew what to expect in terms of the course itself and the hot weather. For me this race was a process to race smart and stick to my plan that my Coach Craig Taylor had set out for me. The goal was stay cool as long as possible, position myself well, and stay hydrated/fueled. I made a few minor errors during the race but I did my best to commit to that plan from start to finish, and execute a smart race. This resulted in a solid and respectable 11th place finish. I am happy with the consistency I'm developing as a U23 triathlete. I still have a lot of work ahead of me but I am slowly climbing that ITU points ladder. I'm learning every race and excited for the Pan American Cup coming up on July 12th in Toronto.
I broke my elbow at the end of August in Europe while riding in the Slovakian mountains. My wheel got caught while I was crossing train tracks. I landed on my elbow and fractured my radial head of my radial bone. Initially it was misdiagnosed and I trained on my broken elbow for 6 weeks and proceeded to race on it. Not a good idea at all, I delayed the healing process of a relatively simple healing fracture. So for the months of November, December, January and early into February, I was not allowed to swim or bike as it put excessive pressure on my elbow. Although it was a very frustrating period time in my life, my coach Craig Taylor help me put things into perspective and focus on some positive outputs of this healing process. We worked together on building a running base and focused on lots of technical work with my healthy arm in the water.

In January our Squad headed to Clermont, FL for a swim focused swim camp! HAH! Which I couldn't fully participate in because I was swimming with one arm. I kicked a heck of lot in the water at this camp. Kick set upon kick set. My legs definitely got a good thrashing. None the less, the camp was a really good bonding time with my team mates and coach. Exposure to some sun helped after the crazy cold weather we had in Canada.

Finally in February the Doctor gave me the thumbs up to ease back into full training. I still remember my first week in the water and how weird it felt to swim and how SLOW I was. Honestly, I didn't even care... I was happy to be healthy and training fully again. With one week of swimming under my belt I competed in an indoor triathlon in Hamilton hosted by C3 triathlon club. It was good to get back into the competitive spirit and I ended up coming 3rd overall.
After, our squad headed to Augora Hills (near Malibu), California for a bike focused camp over reading week. During these 12 days I rode some of the most challenging climbs of my life and I had my team mates helping me push me up these climbs. It was at this camp where I started to find my groove and get back into a consistent training regime. All that technical work in the winter was starting pay off.
Upon return from California, I had a great training block leading into two 5k road races. I may have gone into the races a bit cooked and over trained. I was far from my goal times at these races but I wasn't too worried as I had put in some of the best training sessions of my life. I also started to appreciate the process that goes into training. Focusing on even splitting and technically sound training sessions rather than fast times.

Soon enough, I was heading to Barbados after the completion of my exams (One more semester to go before I graduate from Uni wohooo!) for the first race of my season. It was a small continental cup and a great race to dust off my cob webs. The race was solid for me, but, not what my training was indicative of. I think I went into the race a bit too hungry and I wanted to race so badly that I tightened up. Lesson of the race...relax and have fun! I came a respectable 4th.
After the race it was back to Guelph and straight into one of the biggest and most consistent training blocks of my life. I was swimming technically sound. My wattage on the bike was getting stronger and my running was coming along nicely. I was feeling consistent and happy. These great training blocks were fueling my confidence. After finishing off this wicked training block our squad headed to Dallas, TX to compete at the Pan American Championships.

Here's a quick recap of my fun/frustrating filled summer and fall of racing.

Tartu European Cup:
I decided after Edmonton World Cup to do a low key sprint distance European Cup in Tartu, Estonia at the end of July. It was my first solo trip (without a coach, teammates, parents) so it was a little scary but a fun adventure. The Danish athletes were very accommodating to me and I quickly became good friends with them. Soon we were chanting our moto "We're red white and dynamite!". This event was my first European Cup so I didn't know what to expect. I managed to lead out of the swim (which was a huge surprise) and coming out of T1 I hammered the first 5 minutes of the bike to only look back and see that no one had gone with me. I ended up soloing the 20km ride with a gap of 30 seconds. This really paid off for me as I was only passed by 3 girls and managed to finish 4th. My run split actually fast for the first time in years. I was really proud of my result. The perfect confidence booster that I needed.

The video of the race is below. I get some pretty good camera time:)
Ottawa Provnicials:
Two weeks after Tartu I was racing again at our Provincial Draft Legal Championships in Ottawa. The water quality was not safe for the athletes to swim in so it was changed into a duathlon. I had fun with this race and won it overall.

Karlovy Vary European Cup:
After a string of good racing I decided last minute to give Karlovy Vary European Cup a shot. This race is where my luck turned. After having a good swim that put me in lead pack, on the first loop of the bike my chain dropped and I lost the pack. I managed to get my chain back on and was picked up by the chase pack. I was little frustrated but the race wasn't over and our pack was actually cutting time on the lead pack. On the last loop where the hill was my chain dropped again but this time my derailleur hanger broke and my bike was done. I had 2km left to get to transition, so I decided to run my bike in and finish the race. My legs were feeling great and I didn't want to finish the race like that. As I came into T2 my pack had just finished their first lap so I joined in and ran 3 loops with them. Unfortunately there are no pictures of me racing but if you had seen me, I had bike grease everywhere. On my hands, suit and all over my face from trying to fix my bike. I looked like I had gotten beaten up. Medics were waiting for me at the finish line thinking I had crashed. It gave them a good laugh. I was dissapointed and upset about the race but mechanical issues happen and it was out of my control. (yes I did get a tune up and check over of the bike before I left for the trip)

After my race I decided to stay in Europe for two weeks and visit my grandparents in Slovakia. I took advantage of the beautiful Slovakian Alps and got in some wicked riding. I did a few climbs that were spectacular and had a blast. Unfortunately on the last day of my visit strike 2 of bad luck hit me. I was in bike crash and landed on my elbow. I saw a doctor and he gave me the clear from breaks. I thought it would be healed in time for my double header in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Four weeks leading up to my two races was filled with as much rehab as possible. Training was not consistent and hard, I would take one step forward and then two steps back. I kept getting told that I was going to be okay for races and I really wanted to race. I think I was a little too optimistic but I was mentally eager and hungry to race even if that meant not being at my fittest.

Cozumel World Cup:
Arriving to Mexico I was a little skeptical as to how the race would go, I knew my preparation was not ideal going into the race. I was going off of the fitness I had built from the year. With a weak swim this meant I had to chase on the bike and missed both of the packs. It was a frustrating race for me but I fought all the way to the finish like.

San Juan Pan American Cup:
San Juan was only a week after Cozumel and at this point I hoped that another week of rehab on the arm would help to produce a better result. Although my elbow was feeling much better going into the race my feel for the water was a bit lost. Once again it showed that my normal swimming abilities weren't there. Coming out the water too far back put me in a compromised position and I did as best as I could to ride 40km in the heat solo. Once again not a great result for me. It was an incredible opportunity and a very big learning experience.

Now that I am back at home an ultra sound had confirmed that indeed I have a tiny hairline fracture in the radial head of my radial bone. This was something that was missed in the initial diagnosis and x-rays. I am taking a breather and letting my body heal. The cool thing is that I am taking human anatomy this semester so I am learning along with the doctors about my injury.

It seems at though for the past couple months I have had various strikes of bad luck. It has been a tough time for me but every athlete goes through their struggles and builds to our character.

Personally, I am more motivated to write about my successes and happy times. When my roller coaster of a life dips from a peak high steeply down to a low I am less inclined to share. I know a lot of people would agree and can relate.

This past winter has been the wackiest of coaster rides in my life. It helped me find myself as a person and put everything into perspective. After having a bit of a disappointing result at the U23 World Championships in Auckland, I was fueled with fire and motivated to crush a winter of training. I decided to join the Guelph Gryphons varsity indoor track team to help make a jump in my running. I was running my biggest millage weeks and having a blast at workouts with the team. Unfortunately my body was not yet able to handle such a full load and as a consequence my iron and energy levels hit at an all time low. I was constantly in "hibernation mode" and I would take crazy 4 hour naps in the day to recover between workouts. Eventually I realized it wasn't a fun feeling and I didn't want to continue like that. Once I got my blood results back to confirm my health status, I took some time off to recharge the batteries.

After a little break and building back the load, I was fortunate to head down south to Clermont Florida for a training camp with Kyla Rollinson's group from Montreal. A month in the Florida sunshine was exactly what I needed. I met a wonderful group of athletes that I bonded with in great training sessions! I was starting to get sparks of my old chippery "Domi" self back. I decided that I would try racing the double ITU races in Florida after a couple of productive weeks at training camp. It was probably too soon to jump back into racing and my body wasn't ready yet to rock and roll. Both races were sub par and left me questioning my ability as a triathlete.

I came back from Florida flustered but settled back in Guelph and focused on my exams and consistent training. I ran a 5k road to test the waters and see where my fitness was at. I was pleasantly surprised and all those miles I put in earlier in the year were starting to shine through. After a great 5k and solid block of training, Craig and I decided to do a last minute entry in the Bridgetown ITU Sprint Pan Am Cup.

I had a much better performance in Barbados and had my "Domi" racing qualities back. I felt relaxed and happy to race again. The cherry on top was a second place finish, my first ITU podium finish.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updates over the past couple of months. It has been a whirlwind of midterms, playing a huge game of catch up with school and now preparing for finals.

I have been avoiding talking about this for a while but I have had time to reflect on my race and my season over all and I am not content with how it finished. I worked hard to prepare as best as I could for U23 Worlds and I just wanted the big pay off to be in New Zealand. On race day I was missing that umff, that extra edge. I felt a little flat and was missing my "Domi" racing qualities. It may have been something to do with nerves or some allergies I developed leading up to the race or some other cause. All I know was that my performance was sub-par and I was hoping to execute a better race. I knew that the caliber of racing was going to be high and I didn't expect to be up there with the leaders because developmentally I am just not there yet. But I was expecting to have a better race execution than I had. I can't go back and change anything but I can learn and use the experiences I had for my future racing and training. It was exciting to be in New Zealand racing the best U23 women in the world and I strive to do it again next season.

Also if you haven't already seen it here is my wonderful worlds video, made by my amazing coach Craig Taylor. It definitely embodies me as an athlete. If you are feeling down....just watch the video and it will bring a smile :)

One thing I am happy about this season, I became more of a consistent athlete. More consistent in training and racing. I put in some great training blocks this year and I believe my development as an elite triathlete is in the right direction.

Another new snip-it of news is that I am running varsity indoor track for the Guelph Gryphon's this winter. It is going to be a great winter with hopefully some speedy running.

It was a quite a long drive of 8+ hours but team mate Joanna Brown and I found many ways to amuse ourselves, most of which had our coach Craig Taylor shaking his head laughing. Thanks to Jo were fortunate enough to rent a condo very close to race site and although it was tight at times with a small kitchen and one bathroom between 6 people, we managed to make it work. Cooking communal dinners was a highlight everyday. The relaxed atmosphere in the house put everyone at ease before their race and a joke or two here had everyone in high spirits.

My preparation a few days of the race was not most ideal and I didn't feel like my normal self. Everything felt like grindy. I didn't worry too much and just kept telling myself I would feel better on race day and if not I would just push through it.

Practicing beach starts

Thank goodness when race day rolled around I was my chippery self. I felt confident and ready to rock and roll. Number 4 was my starting number and this was the highest ranking I have had in a race. It was nice to have an early pick on the beach starting line. I knew I was going to have a great start because of the beach and shallow waters. For some reason I seem to be pretty decent at dolphin diving. I think its because of all that time I played on the beach when I was a child pretending to be a mermaid. I had a great start and latched onto the tail end of lead pack. I managed to hold on for roughly 900m and then I lost contact. I swam with a few other girls into the exit and ran like a mad man to T1. Lets just say I was on fire. Blasted in and out of T1 and I think I had the fasted split.

When I got onto my bike I could see the lead pack forming 200m ahead. I got into my aerobars and hammered with Alex Coates. We were on a mission to get that lead pack and managed to catch them 4km into the ride. Once I was in the pack I settled in and took my fair share of pulls. Our pack worked well together. At times it was a bit of an accordion type pack but that's because the course was hilly and rolling.

After a great ride I got onto the run and tried to immediately get a high turnover. I tried to go with the three lead girls and figured I would hold on on for as long as I could. I held on for about 1km before I was dropped into 4th place. From there I felt each lap getting worse. I kept telling my self my mantra "I feel good, I feel great" and that helped me get into a rhythm. The crowds of people cheering for me also helped me get through that run. I was running in 4th place, I really wanted to stay there and I did!

I was really happy with my performance and finished the same place as my ranking. I hit my goal of running under 40minutes on the run and I had a solid race from start to finish. The more I race these Olympic distance races the more experience I gain and the more I learn. I was happy to have a strong race from start to finish. I had fun! I smiled! and I was happy to be where I was. I need to channel the same energy for the next race. "I feel good, I feel great"!

In mid June Dorelle and I headed to Vancouver for a week for a staging camp with our FISU team. Alan Carlson was the head coach of the team heading to Taiwan and he did an amazing job of hosting us with his RTC-Vancouver squad.

After our staging camp we flew off to Yilan County, Taiwan for my first FISU Triathlon Champs. I had a wonderful time in Taiwan at the FISU World University Triathlon Championships and it was one of the best events I have participated in thus far in my triathlon career. People were very hospitable and friendly. The race venue was awesome with a good mix of technical pack splitting sections. The FISU committee and officials took great care of us. I felt like royalty. The whole set up of the event was very much like a mini Olympic games. There was an opening ceremony with all the countries, the triathlon event, and an awesome closing banquet after wards.

I am happy I survived this time in the heat and I finished 18th overall. I wish I could have done better but I need more experiences to learn how to race in the heat. My body just can't handle the heat very well and I need to become acclimatized to race in all conditions.

My race in a short summary:
-Just missed lead pack in the swim
-Was in no mans land for 5k on the bike
-Eventually I was caught by second pack on the bike
-Worked well with the girls in my pack
-Had a good 7.5km run and bonked on the last lap
-The heat really got to me and I got the same dizzy feeling like I did in Dallas.
-Just kept telling my self "I feel good, I feel great" and made it across the finish line.

A week after FISU I was fortunate enough to get into my first World Cup in Edmonton. I had to do everything I could to have a speedy recovery between events and get over a 12 hour time difference jet lag.

Edmonton was a good result for me especially for my first World Cup, I finished 12th and made the cut off to gain some ITU points. I had one of the best swims of my season so far coming out of the water with the main pack and managed to stay in that pack for the ride. The bike course was tough and I enjoyed racing on it. My run on the other hand I struggled with. It may have been fatigue from racing the previous weekend or loading up my legs on the hills. I just never felt good on the run. The cheering from the grand stands and spectators on the sidelines helped me give my best effort. Overall it was an exhilarating experience and my first taste of fast racing against a strong field of girls.

Just though I would make a little update as to what I have been up to for the past month. I have been putting this post off for a while because It didn't go the way I had planned. I guess that's part of being an athlete it's not always an uphill progression. Everyone at some point and I bet more than once reaches a plateau or even a downward slope.
The month of May for me was one of those downward paths. I was very excited to go to my first altitude camp based in Sedona, Arizona at 4,300 ft. I came into the camp with a bit of a cough and thought nothing of it. I wanted to push and train through the illness. However after the first couple days my cough progressed, still my stubborn head thought it would go away so I kept working out. At about day 6 into the camp that's when I hit the wall. Any sort of intensity would have me hacking up phlegm like an 80 year old smoker, by body was weak and I couldn't do anything. I was forced to stop hard training and decided to see a Doctor. It turned out that I had asthma induced by bronchitis and on top of it I was allergic to high amounts of pollen caused by the wildfires that clogged up my sinuses. So camp for me was a bit of disaster. My new goal was to get healthy for my race in Dallas. 20 days we were at camp and I managed to get 3 days of solid training at the end. If I had gone to the Doctor right away and taken those first few days off it would have been a whole different experience. Oh well I definitely learned my lesson and I won't let my hard headed stubbornness get me next time.
Other than the fact that I got sick I tried to make the camp the best experience I could and I have my awesome team mates, training partners, and coaches to thank for helping me.
Sedona overall is a beautiful little town and it is truly a surreal place to train. The scenery is incredible, the riding is challenging and the whole laid back relaxed feel was just what I needed.

Here are some pics from the camp:

After our training camp we flew right to Dallas, TXS to compete in an ITU Continental Cup. Hotshot Laura Bennett was racing so I was excited to line up against some strong girls. The race did not go the way I wanted or expected it to go. It was a learning experience and what danger I put my body through. Race day was roughly 43 degrees Celsius and freaking HOT! The best way I can describe how it felt was racing in a sauna. I had my first DNF in my whole entire career as a triathlete. I was disappointed and felt like my race was incomplete.
I had a good starting spot and got on some fast feet and tried to hold on. My first loop was strong and the second loop was weaker for me and I lost contact. Eventually a gap formed from the pack I was in. I tried to do some blast strokes to catch up but I wasn't strong enough.
I got onto the bike and absolutely drilled the first loop to catch the packs ahead. (Looking at my power file I pb'd my 5 minute power test in the race of 299Watts). Even from the start of the bike I didn't feel like myself. I felt weird like I was cold. I hydrated a lot but that still wasn't enough. Eventually a pack formed for me and we worked really well together. It wasn't until the 6th lap that my chain dropped as I was down shifting. I lost my pack and put it on as fast as I could. I worked really hard to try and catch back up. After going onto the 7th loop I got really dizzy. I got really cold and I was so desperate to cool off that I poured Gatorade from my bottle onto my head. I biked to the side of the road onto a side street and collapsed. That was the end of my race. I had passed out from heat exhaustion. Of the 25 girls who started the race 12 finished. Half the field literally dropped to the ground and out of the race.
I am going to keep my head up high. I work hard and the pay off will come. I do have to remember that it is my first year U23 and I am still at the bottom of the ladder and that it is a process like my Junior years were. I am going to keep climbing that ladder and at some points there will be a couple steps back in order to move forward.

Sorry for such a debbie downer post but on a positive note, I am back home and finally feeling like myself in training. I am having some great session and I have another week here in Guelph before I head out to a staging camp in Vancouver. From there I will travel to Taiwan to compete for Canada in the FISU World University Triathlon Championships. This will be my first time in Asia so I am very excited.

I will be sure post an update after FISU.
I was fortunate enough to get to travel all across the county competing in the Tech Jr. Elite series. I got to race in St. Malo Manitoba, Jr. Pan-American Triathlon Championships in Edmonton, a series race in Penticton BC, Ontario Provincials in Ottawa, and I capped off my season with Junior Nationals in Kelowna BC.

It was after Jr. Nats that I was still hungry to compete. I am moving up to the U23 Elite age next season. I figured my first Olympic Continental Cup in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on the 10th of October would be the perfect opportunity to gain some experience.

In September I was also going to train with the Guelph varsity cross country team and compete for the Gryphons, train for my first Elite Olympic distance race, and manage a full course load in my Biomedical Science program. So my preparation for this race was quite frantic and not the most ideal. I was just looking to have fun and see what elite racing is all about.
Myrtle Beach was the perfect venue to host a race and the weather couldn’t have been any more perfect! It was overcast and the right temperature for racing. Man oh man! Was that one tough race! I am glad I did and it was quite the experience. I finished 14th out of 15 and 2 girls were lapped out. Here is a link to the results http://www.triathlon.org/results/results/2011_myrtle_beach_itu_triathlon_pan_american_cup/6629/
Here is link to a short video of the race (I am the girl in the red suit with the last name Jamnicky and CAN written on it) spot me if you can: http://www.usatriathlon.org/multimedia/media-center.aspx?type=video

Here is my race report:

Pre-Race:

Everything felt pretty good and ran smoothly. I felt pretty good and I ate my pre race gel.

Swim:
I had an outside spot on the pontoon. Dive was great and my first 170m was strong I was on the tail end of lead pack. There was (I kid you not) the strongest current I have ever had to swim in. We were drifting off course. After the shielded 180m in the marina the first 90 degree turn was with the current so we were all getting rammed into the buoy. At this point I was still at the tail end of the lead pack. I kept it this way until the second buoy. It wasn't until I turned around to come back against the current that the gap formed. Man it took forever to get the last buoy before turning into the marina. I literally felt like I was swimming in the same spot and girls were passing me and the pack was getting further and further away. I sucked it up and finished the first loop and went onto the second. For the second loop I just tried to survive and not let the gap between me and the other girls get bigger. I came out of the water three minutes down on the leaders

T1:

Running up the ramp I thought I was alone but there was a girl behind me and I was happy to run into T1 knowing I would at least have someone to bike with.

Bike:

The girl and I worked very well together on the bike. By the second loop we had caught the two girls ahead of us and by the third loop we had caught the rest of the field that wasn't in first pack. I was pushing the pace with the girl who came out of the water with me. We were the only ones who were working and the rest of the girls were sitting in or not strong enough to pull.

T2:

Came into T2 first in my chase pack. Once I got off my bike I had lots of trouble getting my shoes on. I was trembling and my hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Run: The fast runners in my pack ran away right off the bat. I was running in 13th for the first loop. I kept the first loop moderate and controlled. On the second loop I felt stronger so I made a surge on the girl in 12th place and kept it and was gaining on 11th place. It wasn't until the third loop that I felt the brick wall. I was passed by the girl who I surged and another from behind, halfway on the third loop. My legs started to feel like a million pounds each and the rhythm I felt on the second loop was gone! For the rest of the run it was a matter of survival. The last loop I thought I was granny jogging. I just wanted to finish badly and I was in so much pain.

Overall:
I am a little disappointed with my race in general but I did my best and it was definitely an experience. I was hoping to have a better swim and the current set me back a bit (but I guess everyone was in the same boat) so it’s no excuse. This race definitely showed me how much harder Olympic racing is and I have my work cut out for me. I really have to aim to run under 40 minutes off the bike. I wasn't expecting an extraordinary result because my prep for this race was quite minimal. Reality has set in and I got my slap in the face. Reminds me of my first year of racing Junior Elite, it can only go up from here. I also was selected randomly for a drug test which was pretty cool. I definitely know what it means to work now and I am prepared to put in the work this winter.

Dominika
Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-8558241447022789472011-09-01T15:39:00.000-07:002011-09-02T09:00:10.145-07:00Runner's Life
I am proud to announce I have a new sponsor: Runner's Life. So if you have had enough race reports for one week, stop right here.

Last weekend was my first Canadian Junior Series race of the season and I couldn't have been any happier for the race date to finally arrive. I had been doing a lot of prep work in the weeks leading up to the race so I was ready to rock and roll!

I was well taken care of by two of the best massage therapists Marcelle and Noreen. And spoiled by my chiropractor Dr.Alban Merepeza who has worked with a lot of athletes from different countries at various Olympics and sporting events. He did a fantastic job making sure that my body was in tip top shape.

St.Malo is a great weekend get away place and I figure that most Winnipegians go there in the summer time. I liked the simplicity of the place but it was hard to communicate without cell reception. Oh well! Maybe that was a good thing.

Most of the travelling and race preparation was pretty smooth, except my bike! It got beat up in transit. When I was putting it together I lifted it up holing onto one of the handle bar drops and "crack" the whole drop snapped right off. Just my luck! My dad really helped me out and drove to Winnipeg and bought my bike new handle bars. We got them on just in time for the race.

The race itself was a great experience and was executed well. There were some rough patches (like my swim and run) and some positives (the bike). It seems like I just wasn't able to put the pieces of the puzzle together on that day.

My swim from the get go just wasn't there on the day but I didn't panic and did my best to come out of the water in as small as possible gap from the other girls. When my coach Lorri yelled "42 seconds from the leaders". I knew there was a lot of work to be done. Right from the start of the bike I could see a small pack of girls form in front of me. I just got into my aerobars and hammered. I was luck to have Alizee a Quebec triathlete with me, because we worked really well together to catch the girls. Eventually Alizee and I managed to break from that chase pack around two corners and we bridged up to the leaders. I came into T2 and my legs felt like jelly. I knew the run was going to be a long one. I did my best but I was missing that "ompf" I needed and finished in a solid 6th.

I am ready and super excited to race again in a week at PATCO. Hopefully I will have some better luck in Edmonton!Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-5931219751956038012011-06-06T14:44:00.001-07:002011-06-06T14:55:13.491-07:00Zerod FamilyI am proud to say I have jumped onto the Zerod Suit wagon for this season. I contacted Mauricio Beuno the Zerod USA sales rep in Californa (with the help of my training partner and good friend Tom) and I have been added to Zerod's Ambassador Branch this year. I am honored to be part of the Zerod family. My new suit came in the mail a couple of days ago and man oh man.... it's nice! I tried it on and it fits like a glove. It's sooo comfy and stylish. I can't wait to rock it this season.Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-63280475025365895512011-03-05T20:17:00.000-08:002011-03-05T21:05:09.244-08:00First Race of 2011Today was my first race of the season and it was Junior North American Championships. For the States, Mexico and other South American countries it was a qualifier for PATCO. I decided it would be a good race opportunity as I was already here in Clermont for a training camp. I am pretty happy with the outcome (6th place). This was my first Junior triathlon that I have actually led out of the water. However, the swim course was set up to my advantage. Very shallow water for about 200m= lots of sprinting and dolphin diving, which I seem to be half decent at. I had a great transition and rode a little less than the first half lap of the bike by my self until I was caught. I tried to make some breaks in the technical areas with Gab Edwards but I am just not strong enough yet. Onto the run I was feeling little stiff and heavy but I still finished strong. In the elite women's race the run splits were blistering fast. I heard that run course was a little short for all the races but ours, they fixed it in time for our race. It's still early in the season and it was fun to get out and give it a go after a hard 13 days of training. I am looking forward to getting back home to get in some more consitent training and race again in the spring time.Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-62372478446827297432010-12-13T08:00:00.001-08:002010-12-13T08:01:26.319-08:00Happy Holidays !

Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-67283543750797450282010-12-07T20:06:00.000-08:002010-12-07T20:56:16.262-08:00Christmas Time

I am sitting here in my room, trying to do anything but study for my exams. I wish it could all be over very soon. I have been counting down the exams. 1 down and 4 to go!

The past few weeks have been great with training and school and I feel as though everything is falling into place.

I finished November, being chosen as an alternate for Guelph's CIS team, which was a pleasant surprise. My weekend in Sherbrooke was awesome. I learned a lot about Cross Country and how important it is to have a supportive team. It was a great experience being a part of the team and the victory of both our women's and men team. Watching everyone race has lit a little fire in me and I can't wait to come back in future years to race for the Gryphon's. Dave is great coach who had built a team with so much passion, drive, and hard work, it definitely has rubbed off onto me. I am really glad I became part of the running family of Guelph. Some of the friendships I have made will last a life time.

Here are some pictures of the race and banquet:

I also took a block of down time and came back to training feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I am in my third solid week of training with the squad and I love it. I have had more time trials in the past couple weeks than in year. Finally, I used a power meter for the first time in my life. That little computer comes in handy and really allows me to train as a smart athlete. Minus my five minute time trail, where I went out so hard I almost died. You never know until you try! Lesson learned! Speaking of lessons ahah never run by yourself in trails you barely know.... otherwise a 30 min run can easily turn into an hour. I am learning new things everyday, Craig's training program is exciting and everyday for me has been an adventure. I look forward to each day with challenges and fun times.

Christmas is around the corner I only have 10 more days here in Guelph and then I am off to Europe with the fam jam for a couple of weeks. It's going to be a extravagant holiday.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas filled with laughter, love, and lots of eating ! At the beginning of October we travelled to Pennsylvania for the Paul Short cross country meet and that was an awesome trip. It took a while to get across the border for me with my Australian passport, who knew I had to pay a whole six dollars to get a green card! The course was very muddy and parts of it were practically underwater. It had rained a lot before the race and there were times I thought the mud would take me on a slippery ride.
Another cool trip recently was to Eugene, Oregon for the Bill Dellinger cross country Invitational. This was my favourite trip and it was an amazing experience. I got see the University of Oregon and all it's sports facilities. I got to run a 6km race on Pre's Trails and I met a lot of nice down to earth people.
This past weekend was Brock Invitational and a short 3km race. I haven't raced that distance since grade 9. As soon as that gun went off it was a sprint from start to finish! The race was over before it even began. I really enjoyed this one, I was able to used my speed without dying!

The cross season is slowly wrapping up with OUAs and CIS approaching in the next couple weeks. It will be fun to be part of the team and cheer all Gryphs to hopefully win some more titles

I am looking forward to getting back into triathlon training and building some technique and experience for the new season.Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-2488087427893618822010-09-27T12:29:00.000-07:002010-09-27T12:36:55.791-07:00Western Invitational!
Some Pictures of the race on the weekend :)

Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-81874300502363297232010-09-25T19:32:00.001-07:002010-09-25T19:53:53.871-07:00University Life and Interesting Life LessonsWith the summer over and fall quickly approaching, I thought it would be a good time to update my blog.
This past month has been a busy one! Moving to my new home Guelph and becoming a student at the University of Guelph. The weeks just seem to be flying. I must say though, that I am really enjoying it here and have settled in nicely.
I am currently swimming a couple times a week with the RTC and it has been awesome, I will start my full program with them in a couple months. I am aslo proud to say that I am officially a Guelph Gryphon Cross Country Runner and I had my debut race today at Western Invitational. And what an experience that was. It will definitely be a day that I never forget.
A lot of lessons learned from today's race:
Lesson 1: High school cross country races and University Cross country races are two completely different things!
Lesson 2: Even if you feel good! Don't be an idiot and run in second place for the first 2km of the race. Keep it a bit conservative!
Lesson 3: If you feel people are starting out the race slow! Its for a reason.... they all speed up as the race progresses!
Lesson 4: Have balls! but play it smart.

Basically today I started out way to fast and died! I ended up coming in 19th place which is still decent, but, golly jeepers these ladies can run fast! I definitely was put into my place. The one thing I can commend myself for, was being fearless! I Definitely made some rookie mistakes, but, since high school I have always just hopped onto the line and ran hard from start to finish. I can see that in University this is not the case, there are a lot of tactics and strategies used. I kind of felt little embarrassed today, however, it showed me I have a lot to learn in the world of sports! Oh well lesson learned and definitely won't make it again!

I am looking forward to trial number 2 at Lehigh Invitational in Pennsylvania next weekend, with some new race strategies in my back pocket :)Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-6582827117386157342010-08-24T20:30:00.001-07:002010-08-24T21:08:31.864-07:00Finish with a Bang! This past weekend was my National Championships and final race of Junior series. The race was held in Kelowna, BC and it was the most beautiful and organized venue I have raced at. The couple weeks leading up to the race were on and off, but I am glad I was able to pull it together for the race. Conditions on race day were perfect. The sun was shining and absolutely no wind. Finally my swimming was a consistent one, and I came out of the water where I wanted to be. Kudos to Hilary Willie who absolutely crushed the swim and bike. Once she overcomes her injury she is going to be a force to be reckoned with! I had a little pack on the bike with two girls (Ellen Pennock and Amelie Kretz) and we rode really well for two laps, until we were caught by another little pack of three! I made sure I was in front coming into T2 and I ran for my life. I had an awesome race and finished 2nd! My best ever placing at a Junior race. It was a great race for me and a huge confident booster! Once again I couldn't wipe that smile off my face and I was so happy to finish my season with bang!

Unfortunately my triathlon season has come to an end. This summer has really flown by and I am looking forward to some downtime and just relaxing! I am still in Kelowna taking a couple days to explore with my family. Today we hiked Knox Hill, which was an awesome experience! Hopefully this won't be my last visit to Kelowna!

Here are some pics of the day:

Dominika Jamnickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07192011526173059544noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2145040601206408707.post-16264394971628504102010-08-04T18:06:00.000-07:002010-08-04T18:29:54.822-07:00Fun Weekend!

This past weekend was a great one with back-to-back races!
